Omega Market Scams: How to Spot Counterfeits
Fraudsters target the gap between expectation and reality. They build sites that look almost identical to Omega Market. Close inspection reveals the cracks. Most scams rely on haste or confusion. Stay slow.
Lookalike Addresses
Fake markets change only one or two characters in their .onion URL. For instance, a scam site might replace the letter r with an n near the middle of the string. The layout mirrors the original perfectly. Check the full address character by character. Compare it against the known good string posted in trusted forums or on your saved bookmarks. Memorize the ending. Verify the beginning before typing anything sensitive.
Fake Support Channels
Legitimate support never initiates contact via direct message. If a user with a generic name opens a chat to help you fix a payment, treat it as a trap. Official support responds to tickets submitted within the market interface. If you receive a message asking for your passphrase or 2FA codes, close the tab. Real staff identify themselves by their verified operator tag and link back to the main ticket thread. Unsolicited advice is always a red flag.
Deposit Address Swaps
Before paying, copy the XMR deposit address provided in your account dashboard. Paste it into a fresh text editor. Now paste it again from the payment confirmation screen. Compare them. Some malware modifies clipboard contents silently. If the digits differ, the coins go to the attacker. Always double check the first four and last four characters. If in doubt, pay from a cold wallet using a freshly generated address.
Subtle UI Tells
Watch for wrong PGP fingerprints displayed in the footer. The correct fingerprint starts with 6383E112. If the page shows different hex values, exit. Also notice if the login modal asks for your mnemonic. It should only ask for your passphrase and 2FA code. Unusual spacing around buttons or fonts that render slightly differently indicates a poorly cloned template. Trust your instinct when things feel off. Leave and return later via a bookmarked link.
